To create vector-based patterns in Adobe Illustrator and thus texture entire surfaces, TutKit.com provides you with patterns in the form of AI files, for example with beautifully shaped ornaments.

The basic principle behind this: The files contain vector-based image structures that you can simply lay on top of each other again and again on larger surfaces to create a pattern. The patterns are often designed to create seamless transitions between the individual pattern elements.

Below we explain how to import the AI files into Adobe Illustrator and use them to apply patterns to your areas.

Creating patterns using color swatch libraries in Adobe Illustrator

To use AI files for texturing surfaces, use the color swatch libraries in Adobe Illustrator:

  1. Select the Other Library... function via the Window menu and then Color Field Libraries. Alternatively, open the corresponding dialog menu in the upper right corner of the Swatches panel. There you will find the same function Other library... under Open swatch libraries.
  2. Select the desired AI file on your computer and click on Open.
  3. You have now loaded the patterns into your library, where the patterns are displayed in a preview.
  4. Select the object that you would like to fill with a pattern and apply the desired pattern. Alternatively, you can drag new objects that are filled directly with the selected pattern.

To scale or rotate a pattern within an object, right-click on the object with the pattern and select Transform>Transform individually... Deactivate the checkbox for Transform objects in the menu. Activate the checkbox for Transform pattern instead. Now use the functions for scaling, moving and rotating.
