If the fonts we have planned for a design template are not available on your computer, you can install them (see instructions here).

In addition, the text fields in our design templates can be edited completely freely. This means you can adjust the font, font style, font size, font color and, of course, the written content as you wish. The easiest way to do this is to activate the text tool, click in a text field and make the appropriate changes.

But be careful: In order to edit a design template effectively, it is highly recommended to work with the paragraph, character formats and color fields it contains, as many text fields access these. By making changes there, you change the formatting of your texts throughout the entire document. So-called basic formats are often created as paragraph formats at the beginning. They contain the basic settings for your font. If you change the font family there, all other formats based on it will change automatically. This means that you only have to make changes in one place when using basic formats.

We explain how to adjust the colors using color fields here. You can find out how to format your font with paragraph styles below.

Paragraph styles: a change automatically affects all text fields

For each text field in InDesign, the font, font size and font style in which the respective text is to be displayed is stored, among other things. As a design often contains several text fields with the same font formatting, the use of so-called paragraph formats is recommended.

For a paragraph format, you define the various parameters once and can then use the paragraph format to apply them quickly and easily to multiple text fields and the paragraphs they contain throughout your document. For individual words, on the other hand, you work with character formats. However, the principle is identical, except that the scope is limited to words, letters or the area selected with the cursor.

The advantage: If you want to change a parameter afterwards, for example the font, you do not have to do this individually for each text field. Instead, you only change the parameter in the paragraph format so that the change you make has a direct effect on all text fields assigned to the paragraph format.

Using paragraph formats to change the font

If you want to make changes to the font, font style or font size in one of our design templates, we recommend taking a look at the created paragraph and character formats. This will help you achieve faster results.

We always prepare our templates so that a single paragraph format is assigned to all text fields that have the same font formatting. To make changes to this, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the control panel for paragraph styles (Window>Paragraph Styles).
  2. Double-click on the paragraph format you want to change.
  3. This will open the paragraph style options with all the settings.
  4. To change the font, font style and font size, click on Basic character styles.
  5. There you can make the changes in the selection menus behind Font family and Font style as well as in the input field behind Font size. Tip: Activate the Preview checkbox in the bottom left-hand corner of the window so that the effects of your changes are displayed directly.
  6. Then click on OK.
