Learning photography: all the important aspects in one course

Do your photos look rather poor and nothing distinguishes them from others? But you want to achieve more with your pictures? Then you need to know the basics of photography on the one hand and the creative aspects of photography on the other. This course offers you both in a comprehensive introduction.

For better photos: understand the basics, know the rules of image composition

The field of photography is broad and covers everything from technical to creative aspects. The photography course takes you by the hand and guides you step by step through the jungle of photographic basics in 9 hours, 13 clearly structured chapters with 100 lessons. Included are both theoretical explanations and practical sections, for which you will receive working materials.

By the end of the course, you'll understand how your camera takes a picture and you'll know what's behind all the buttons and functions. More importantly, you will be able to choose the right settings in different shooting situations. This, coupled with knowledge of the rules of image composition, will enable you to create simply better photos - ones that convey your own style and stand out from the crowd.

Learning photography step by step: the structure of the photography course

In each lesson, your trainer will address a specific topic. You will receive theoretical background knowledge as well as practical tips and tricks from an experienced photographer. For example, Matthias Butz will gradually guide you away from automatic mode and towards M mode, where you decide for yourself which settings your camera should use. You will learn this in the course:

    Exposure & camera basics

    • How does your camera perceive light? How and with which methods is light measured?
    • The right exposure: exposure time, Blender and ISO considered individually and in context.
    • What is the difference between raw and JPG? Which format is suitable for which purpose?
    • What is the dynamic range all about? How do you "read" a histogram correctly?
    • What do all the buttons and functions on your camera mean?
    • What do you need to consider when choosing the sensor size and resolution of your camera?
    • What is white balance and how do you use it?

    Autofocus, camera modes

    • How does autofocus work? What are focus fields? When should you focus manually?
    • Practical tip: Use focus recomposing for razor-sharp images.
    • Practical tip: How to focus in the dark with an AF assist light.
    • Understand the modes of your camera and find out which mode is suitable in which situations.
    • Because anyone can use automatic: Make your way through Blender and Aperture priority to manual M mode.
    • Use the BULB mode for long exposures and create your own modes.

    Equipment & lenses

    • What should you consider when choosing a memory card, battery, tripod and filter?
    • What about the focal length and what do you need to consider?
    • What do all the specifications on a lens mean?
    • In practice: gray filters for long exposures, using a lens hood and a kit lens.

    Image composition & light

    • Know the rules of image composition and learn how to apply them creatively to your photos.
    • The rule of thirds, the golden ratio, lines, perspective and the line of sight - you should pay attention to these.
    • Image editing, framing, depth and blur, portrait or landscape format - how do you work with them?
    • Rules are good - and it's okay to break them. Find out how you can do this effectively.
    • What is hard light, what is soft light and what is suitable for which situations?
    • How to work effectively with ambient and artificial light and light colors.
